West Hennepin Public Safety (WHPS) were called to the intersection of County Road 92 and County Road 11 for a personal injury crash around 5:43 a.m. on October 16, 2009.

According to the report, Adam Christian, 20 of Maple Lake was southbound on County Road 92 and was stopped at the four way stop sign at the intersection of County Road 11 when his vehicle was rear-ended. Charles Caswell, 21 of Maple Lake was traveling southbound County Road 92 and struck Christian’s vehicle at a high rate of speed.  Caswell did not recall hitting the car and thought he must have fallen asleep.

Officer Heupel stated, “Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts which prevented serious injuries.” Christian reported back soreness and was treated at the scene by North Memorial Ambulance Care Unit. Caswell was issued a citation for ‘Driving without Due Care.’

Both vehicles were inoperable and were towed by Loretto Towing.  WHPS was assisted at the scene by Medina PD, Delano Fire Rescue and North Memorial Ambulance Care Unit.

House Fire

On 1/8/10 at approximately 10:09 a.m. West Hennepin Public Safety (WHPS) and Maple Plain Fire Department (MPFD) were dispatched to the Mary Lynch property at 4976 South Lakeshore Drive in the City of Independence for a report of a house fire and heavy smoke.  While en route, WHPS was notified that flames were observed in the basement of the house.

Upon arrival, Officer Rick Denneson, Sergeant Gary Kroells and Director Ray McCoy confirmed with people at the scene that everyone was out of the residence.

MP Fire Chief Nathan Jerde stated “Our initial size-up prior to the arrival of our first truck allowed us to perform a direct attack and quickly knock-down the fire.  The coordination with our mutual-aid partners was great and supported an efficient attack on the fire.  Cold weather is something we are certainly familiar with but it always adds additional challenges.  Everyone did an excellent job and it speaks again to the extraordinary service provided by our local citizen firefighters.  One person was home at the time of the fire but in a separate part of the house and uninjured.  No firefighters were injured.”

MPFD was assisted by Loretto FD, Long Lake FD, Hamel FD, Delano FD, Mound FD, Wayzata and Medina Police Department. Watertown and Hanover FD’s responded to the MP and Loretto FD stations to cover other calls for firefighters at the scene. Hennepin County Fire Investigation Team was requested to respond to the scene to assist with the fire origin.

WHPS Director Ray McCoy stated, “The firefighters did a fantastic job of quickly extinguishing the fire despite the cold temperatures and icy conditions from a previous snow storm. Today is a great example of the firefighter’s monthly meetings for education and training to help keep our firefighters safer, preparing them for the emergency responses and working together with other responding agencies.”

The Hennepin County Fire Investigation Team and State Fire Marshall’s Office are assisting WHPS with the investigation as to the cause of the fire.
