CenterPoint Energy Grant Awarded for Medical Bags

At the July 18, 2011, West Hennepin Public Safety Police Commission meeting, Roger Brandel, CenterPoint Energy Area Manager, presented a check in the amount of $1,755 to Sgt. Gary Kroells for the purchase of new medical bags and emergency entry tools.  Sgt. Kroells stated, 'Without this valuable donation, our old and outdated medical supply bags would not have been replaced in these tight economic times.'

On 11/24/11 at approximately 5:42 a.m. Plain Fire Department (MPFD) was dispatched to the Lowell Seashore property at 5475 Joyce Street in the City of Maple Plain for a report of a house fire.

Officer Stephanie Heupel of West Hennepin Public Safety (WHPS) was on routine patrol in the city of Maple Plain and observed the Seashore residence on fire. Officer Heupel reported that she could see heavy smoke and flames on the south side of the house.

A large fire on the deck had spread to the attached garage and was spreading to the side of the main house.  Officer Heupel was able to make contact with the resident inside, who was later identified as Kara Jankord, from Seattle, WA. Jankord was the only one in the house and there were no pets inside. The homeowners, Lowell and Susan Seashore were out of town.

Director Ray McCoy stated, “Jankord had been sleeping at the time of the fire and did not realize there were any problems. Jankord stated she woke up to someone pounding on the windows.”

The origin of the fire was located in the area of a fire ring located behind the garage. Jankord advised she and her friend Caleb Steffenhagen of Maple Plain had a bonfire in a fire ring at the back of the residence. Steffenhagen said that they kept the fire in the fire ring. The fire had died down and they were finished.  They made sure the wood was inside the fire ring, checked on it around midnight and there was no visible fire and it didn't appear to be hot.

MPFD Fire Chief, Nathan Jerde advised that a steady south wind of 12 – 15 mph with wind gusts over 20 mph developed overnight which may have contributed to reigniting the fire that was in the fire ring.  The cause of the fire is undetermined pending the official report from the Hennepin County Fire Chiefs Association Fire Investigation Team.

Director McCoy stated, “Officer Heupel’s routine patrol in the neighborhood and her quick actions to get the fire department started and alert the home occupant, no doubt saved a life.”

MPFD was assisted by Loretto Fire and the Hennepin County Fire Chiefs Association Fire Investigation Team.
